LTO-8
Not Just Tape, LTO-8
LTO-8 is more than just tape. It's double the capacity of LTO-7, has a low TCO, and provides reliable, offline security for long-term storage and protection.

LTO Tape Storage: For Long-Term Data Retention
As the demand for low-cost, greater-capacity, long-term archive requirements rise for enterprises, LTO tape storage is the ideal solution for long-term data retention and archiving, with its high storage capacity, blazing-fast transfer rates, easy-to-use functionality, and steadfast reliability.
Quantum’s LTO tape media delivers a simple, affordable, all-in-one data protection solution that customers can depend on. LTO tape enables you to keep the most important part of your business, your data, safe with the lowest TCO. By keeping a copy of your archive offline, you’re protected against ransomware, malware, and other cybersecurity attacks.
LTO-8: High Storage Capacity and Performance
Quantum LTO-8 features include a compressed capacity of up to 30 TB per cartridge, high durability, support for WORM (Write Once Read Many), LTFS (in standalone drives only), and backwards compatibility with LTO-7 tape media. With open source technology, you’re given the flexibility to choose and never be locked into proprietary technologies.

Featured Benefits

Increased Performance and Capacity
With 12 TB of raw and up to 30 TB of compressed capacity, LTO-8 dramatically reduces the floor space required to store long-term data.

Lowest-Cost Storage
TCO comparison against other long-term storage media shows LTO remains the low-cost leader.

Mitigate Data Loss and Corruption
LTO provides cold, offline data storage for the ultimate tier of data protection.

Flexibility
LTO-8 tapes are future compatible with LTO-9 drives; can format new and unused LTO-7 tapes as Type M-8 media, which doubles LTO-7 capacity and reduces media by 50%.
Tape: Your Last Line of Defense Against Ransomware
Ransomware seeks and attacks known vulnerabilities in the network, where data on servers, storage, and everything else connected to it will most likely be compromised. For your data to be truly protected, we recommend an offline or air-gapped copy in your backup strategy that works in conjunction with your security software, hard disk drives (HDD), and cloud storage.
Because tape storage is an ‘offline’ storage technology, it provides effective protection against ransomware and malware. Tape is your last line of defense—simply because criminals can’t delete or encrypt what they can’t access over the network. To fully protect your data against ransomware, prevent the infection in the first place, and then perform regular backups, replicating data to off-site and offline media such as tape.

Technical Specifications
Higher Storage Capacity
12 TB native and up to 30 TB compressed
Better Performance
Expect data transfer rates of up to 900 MB/sec compressed and 360 MB/sec uncompressed.
Future Compatibility
LTO-8 tapes will be able to be read by and written to LTO-9 tape drives and be able to be read by LTO-10 drives.
Type M Media Support
LTO-8 drives will be able to format new, unused LTO-7 tapes as Type M-8 media. This will allow the use of LTO-7 tapes in the LTO-8 drive and increase the normal capacity of an LTO-7 tape by 50%, up to 22.5 TB.
Backward Compatible
LTO-8 drives can read and write to LTO-7 tapes (note LTO-8 drives cannot read or write to LTO-6 tapes).
