BaaS (Backup-as-a-Service)

A sales and service model for data backup generally utilizing storage devices hosted in a remote location (such as a provider's 'cloud') that a third party owns or manages. Instead of making a capital investment in backup hardware and software, a BaaS customer purchases backup 'services' on a subscription basis. Price is normally tied to capacity or a combination of capacity and access. This model can be attractive, as it avoids a capital expense and only the capacity needed is purchased.
