Extending the Power of Data De-Duplication across the Enterprise
Data de-duplication is on the minds of IT Managers around the world. And rightfully so: it’s an enabling technology that can dramatically increase the power of disk for backup and disaster recovery. But existing approaches have been limited in scale, scope, and flexibility. The new DXi7500 extends the power of de-duplication across the enterprise and provides customers with choice: a full range of capacity and performance points, flexible policies for de-duplication, and options to integration directly with tape.

Quantum Teams with Symantec
Quantum Teams with Symantec
to Deliver Integrated Disk and
Tape Solution

Quantum and Symantec have teamed together to deliver a multi-tier backup solution that integrates disk and tape in an enterprise solution. Quantum is the first vendor to support NetBackup’s Direct to Tape feature in its new DXi7500 de-duplication solution. The DXi7500 was designed to enable data movement directly between disk and tape, offloading this burdensome task from the media server and the network. NetBackup’s 6.5 Direct to Tape feature provides customers with the ability to apply different lifecycle policies and catalog updates associated with the virtual copy on disk and the physical copy on tape. Together, these two powerful capabilities allow customers to leverage disk, de-duplication, and tape in a fully-managed solution.

University Learns How to Cut
Backup Time in Half
The University of St. Thomas performs 20 TB full backups over the weekends, supplemented by daily 1 TB incremental backups. St. Thomas needed to shorten their backup window while increasing reliability and performance, so they sought a solution with more throughput and capacity while filling a need for longer-term data storage.

By deploying a de-duplication solution and tape libraries from Quantum, they were able to shorten their backup window, increase reliability and capacity, and meet their archive needs.
